At the end of many Bayside Institute classes, I am often hoping the instructor will share one or two resources to further explore the subject matter discussed. Something that may dive deeply into the matter at hand, share information, tips or tricks for perfecting a skill or recipe, or offer a second opinion. While I often take notes at all of the classes, I have recently started recording the books and apps mentioned in the classes for further learning. The list below features five books mentioned by the instructors at a variety of classes. I hope to develop a resource list to share each quarter with books, apps, and other sources so that you, too, can explore further.

  1. Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America by Roger Tory Peterson, Lee Peterson, and Lee Allen Peterson
    • Recommended by Jim Rapp, instructor of Summer Breeding Birds
  2. Bringing Nature Home by Douglas W. Tallamy
    • Recommended by Valery Cordry, instructor of Why Pollination Matters
  3. Bird by Bird by Ann Lamott
    • Recommended by Ethan Joella, instructor of Translating Real Events into Creative Writing
  4. The Craft Beer Revolution: How a Band of Microbrewers Is Transforming the World’s Favorite Drink by Steve Hindsy
    • Recommended by Lauren Bigelow, instructor of Summer Canned Beers
  5. Mr. Boston Official Bartender’s Guide by Jonothan Pogash
    •  Recommended by Megan, instructor of Refreshing Cocktails

While it is easy enough to hop online and order a book from Amazon or Barnes & Noble, I love supporting local whenever possible. Sometimes these books aren’t available locally, but it is worth a shot and an afternoon browsing the bookstore to find out! The nearest bookstores include:

Bethany Beach Books in Bethany Beach, DE
Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach, DE
Masons Used & New Books in Ocean City, MD
