Exploring The Art of Pottery 7 Part Series @ The Health & Aquatic Club

“Let’s Learn Pottery Together”
The art of pottery is often times described as therapeutic and relaxing.  This March is the perfect time to come out and learn something new and relaxing in a fun and encouraging hands-on pottery class with Susan Deller – a local studio potter at Inspired 59.com.  This Bayside Institute class is designed for Beginners and will include eight (7), 2-3 hour sessions. Participants will learn the basics of pottery hand building, creating & attaching handles & sprigs, and will also be introduced to numerous glazing techniques and surface decorations.  You will work, while having fun, with white mid-fire stoneware clay and everyone will create, at least 2, beautiful pottery pieces:
(1) Mug with microwave-safe handle
                AND
(2) Olive Oil Cruet -or- Dish Soap Dispenser
(See samples of possible pieces you can create below -OR- you can bring your own ideas). 
All pottery pieces created will be kiln-fired twice locally to create food, microwave and dishwasher-safe pottery creations that you will proudly enjoy for years to come &/or gift to a lucky someone!  This class will be limited to a maximum of 12 attendees.
$150* per person for eight (7) sessions in March 2024. Payment in full required prior to starting class March 4th.
*Instruction, clay, glazes, surface-decorating supplies, cruet spout, use of special Instructor-supplies and two kiln firings, for at least two completed pieces, are included in this fee.
+  *All participants must purchase a one-time basic pottery tool kit from Instructor for $25 (this will be kept by you & used for any future projects).

This class will be held in a series format on the following dates:

Monday, March 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th from 2:00-4:30 pm

Wednesday, March 6th, 13th, 27th from 2:00-4:30 pm

Come by yourself or bring your best friend! It’s a lovely experience whether you’re coming with a friend, family member, or solo!

Primary Members $150.00/Extended Family Members or Member Guest $155.00

Payment of $150.00 for Bayside Members (billed to membership account) or $155 for guests of members upon registration. This class is non-refundable. Materials will be purchased by the instructor in advance, for all registered students. We appreciate your understanding.

Bayside Institute’s Dinner and A Film Screening, Supporting The Delaware Inland Bays @ Signatures

The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays presents dinner & a movie! Dinner provided by Signatures at Bayside followed by a screening of “Salted Earth”, a documentary about climate threats. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Center staff and several folks who worked on the film.

Hattitude: History of Black Women in Church Hats @ Signatures Restaurant - Upstairs
May 8 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

“Hattitude: History of Black Women in Church Hats”

Dr. Yvonne Watson, Bayside resident, will display and discuss some of her mother’s vintage Church Hats, which she strutted every Sunday. Church Hats are deeply rooted historically in the African American tradition and culture. Dr. Watson inherited and preserved over 100 designer and handmade hats belonging to her mother and a sampling of them will be modeled. This Collection was curated in the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC and modeled at numerous teas and historic events in NC.

As a tribute, tea will be served. Attendees are encouraged to wear one of their favorite hats.

Join sound healer Julie Fisher, The Gifted Alchemy for a passive meditation using sound. With a collection of instruments including singing bowls, a gong, chimes, a drum, and her voice, you will easily relax into a meditative state – typically 5 to 10 minutes after the sounds begin. Whether you are seeking a peaceful escape or are on a wellness journey, this is an experience for you.

Personal Safety Seminar @ Bayside Health and Aquatic Club

Seminar on Personal Safety; Ways to minimize risks and avoid confrontations by maintaining an awareness of the environment around you.

This seminar, developed by Bayside resident Mark Camillo was originally created and taught as a workshop for disabled veterans during national events hosted by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Mark, a retired Secret Service Agent conducted this workshop for ten years at VA events, and later adapted it for other populations who can benefit from this approach, which is focused on recognizing danger, minimizing the risks, and avoiding confrontation. Participants will also see examples of how to survive confrontations when given no other option.  Protecting oneself from harm by avoiding harmful situations is a theme that runs throughout this seminar.

Biography

Mark Camillo retired after serving 21 years as a Special Agent in the US Secret Service. During his career, Mark served as the Chief Control Tactics Instructor at the Secret Service National Training Center. During that time at the training center, Mark developed the “Street Survival Awareness” workshop that is the basis for the personal safety seminar. Mark holds a 7th degree black belt in Korean Karate and is a certified G.R.A.P.L.E. instructor from the Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy. Mark lives with his wife Sara Jane at the Point in Bayside and serves on the HOA Safety & Security Committee.

Local skin clinic, SavvyDerm, is hosting a “Beyond the Big Three: Summertime Skincare” class and will teach you all about SPF, when it’s time to see a dermatologist, and the foundations of skincare. They’ll provide charcuterie to nibble on and we will supply wine to sip on while you learn.

  • Quick overview of the big three foundational skincare products
  • Expand on what can be done during the summer to help beat back sun damage and not ruin all the work during the previous fall, winter and spring.
