Museums & Art At The Beach

Southern Delaware and Maryland are steeped in history and it is easy to step back in time visiting the area’s many museums and historical sites.

The Indian River Life-Saving Station in Rehoboth Beach and the Ocean City Life-Saving Station were created in late 1800's in response to the growing number of shipwrecks along the coastline. Both are now museums open to the public. The Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes, Delaware houses shipwreck artifacts and tells the story of Lewes, which was the first European settlement in the state of Delaware.

The Delaware beach area was very important to the country's coastal defense during World War II and the remnants of that time can be found at the Fort Miles Historical Area with its concrete observation tower, barracks and battery.

Because of its history and beauty, the arts flourish in these coastal towns. Art is an important part of the area's culture and visitors can wander through numerous art galleries and shops featuring everything from fine art, photography, and paintings to hand-crafted jewelry and pottery. The Rehoboth Art League sponsors classes, lectures and programs throughout the year while Bethany Beach and Ocean City hold annual Arts Alive! festival celebrating local artists and their work.
