First Annual Breast Cancer Walk at Bayside
Raises Over $8,000

SELBYVILLE, DE. November 9, 2007 – Curves of Selbyville and Carl M. Freeman Companies joined forces to sponsor the first annual “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® Walk at Bayside” on Saturday, October 27, raising over $8,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Despite the windy and rainy conditions, more than 125 people came out to support the event. Participants had the choice of a 2.5k walk down Bayside’s Signature Boulevard or a longer 5k walk that wound throughout the community. Non-walkers were kept entertained under a large tent at the Bayside Resort Golf Club with live music by the Plenty Problems Steel Drum band from the Southern Delaware School of the Arts. The group donated their time for the event as did many members of the Curves of Selbyville. The members organized several auctions for the day and generously made baked goods that were for sale.

Brenda Granz, owner of Curves of Selbyville, approached Freeman Companies with the idea of a breast cancer walk when a friend suggested Bayside would be a great venue for holding such an event. Granz, who is a breast cancer survivor of over 20 years, became very involved in fundraising for the American Cancer Society after her 49-year-old sister Connie passed away of the disease. She formed a fundraising committee with other Curves’ members and last year they raised $5,500 for the American Cancer Society. It was Granz’s dream to organize a walk in Selbyville in memory of her sister.

“We were thrilled that Curves of Selbyville wanted to host a breast cancer fundraising walk at Bayside,” said Patti Grimes, vice president of Carl M. Freeman Companies. “It’s a great way to bring the community together and collectively work together to find a cure for breast cancer.”

“We received an overwhelming response from area businesses,” Grimes continued. Creative Concepts, PNC Bank, Bayside Physical Therapy, Bunting & Murray, Heilman Limousine, Heilman Drywall, and Marc Grimes Seacoast Realty quickly joined the cause as secondary sponsors of the walk. Superior Signs, Williamsville Deli, and Boyden Design donated their services while other businesses gave items for the auctions. Several EMTs from Roxanna also donated their time during the walk to insure everyone’s safety.

Grimes said, “Curves of Selbyville and Freeman Companies plan to continue sponsoring this event and we believe it can only get bigger and better in the coming years.”
