Bayside Holds “Junior Archeology Day”

OCEAN VIEW, DE. August 1, 2004 – On July 15, the currently undeveloped land that will be the future home of Bayside became more than just a construction site. The area was transformed into an excavation site and used as an educational tool for a group of about 40 children from the local area and Iron Hill Museum’s Junior Archaeologist Camp.

The students learned about the history of the local area while they searched for any remnants of the past that they could find. Heite Consulting, Inc. conducted the project that included a presentation about the local environment, the history of the land, and what certain artifacts found by the children indicated.

“The Junior Archaeology Day is just the first of many such environmental and educational programs to be conducted at Bayside” said Tom Halverstadt, Vice President and General Manager of Carl M. Freeman Communities. A nature center will also be an integral part of the community in years to come. It will be open to residents and visitors for other programs like the Junior Archaeology Day with a mission to encourage environmental awareness and education. More than 50% of the 867 acres comprising Bayside will remain open space including self-guided nature trails for community members to enjoy and explore the natural land.
