Freeman Foundation Hosts Hundreds at StARTS and Stripes Memorial Day Carnival

FENWICK ISLAND, DE. June 1, 2008 – The Carl M. Freeman Foundation hosted nearly 1,000 people at their “StARTS and Stripes” Memorial Day Carnival on Saturday, May 24. The event was held at the future home of the Joshua M. Freeman Center for the Arts at Bayside in Fenwick Island and marked the kickoff of a summer-long series of community arts events.

“We’re thrilled with the number of our friends and neighbors who came out to enjoy the beginning of a great artsy summer,” stated Jean Shaughnessy Hodges, Executive Director of the Carl M. Freeman Foundation. “It was an exciting day that showcased outstanding performers and a chance to learn about the future of the arts in Sussex County.”

The Freeman Summer Stage Series will run from June 20 to August 30 and includes free theatre and musical performances, movie nights, and children’s arts workshops. The series will begin Friday, June 20, with a performance from the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. Each week features new entertainment:

  • Family Night every Thursday at 7:00pm and includes comedy shows and theatre performances;
  • Music on the Green held every Friday at 7:00pm and features performances by symphony orchestras to local bands;
  • Children’s Hour presented every Saturday mornings at 10:00am and includes storytelling and visual arts workshops, and;
  • Movie Night presented every Saturdays at 8:30pm with great features films such as Night at the Museum and Nancy Drew.

In addition to the weekly events, each month the Freeman Summer Stage will bring a headline show including Einstein’s Breakfast June 26 and 27, South Pacific in July, and the Washington National Opera and Choral Arts Society of Washington in August.
